Well-named mare Protest scored a strong and determined win today at Aquis Park at the Gold Coast Turf Club in taking out the Sci Fleet Hino Class Three Handicap over 1800 metres by One Length. The daughter of Smart Missile appreciated the step up to 1800 Metres along with the trying conditions that made the race a slogging test to bring up her third career victory.
Protest has always shown Team Guy that she had a future as a stayer but she was always going to take time and patience from her owners and when her original owners Aquis Farm indicted that she did not fit their future plans the stable was quick to put together a group of new and existing clients to race the mare. Although things didn’t go to plan at her first preparation for the new owners the group remained confident that she would be able to turn her form around and this was not lost on Co Trainer Bryan Guy who thanked the group for their loyalty “She had a tough prep as a Three Year Old and a very tough run in the Oaks and while she raced good at her next prep for the new owners she lacked a strong finish, so I said to give her a good break and bring her back and see if she could deliver on the early promise she showed me they would get a return on their investment. The win was no surprise today as her last run was good, Mark Du Plessis who rode her last start said she was just half a run short and he was 100% right. I have to thank Mark he has put a fair bit of work into her, it’s a shame she didn’t gain a start last Wednesday but Mark’s loss was Jason Taylor’s gain and what can I say about the ride it was Ten out of Ten!”
Protest was ridden for the first time today by Jason Taylor and he was very pleased with the way the mare raced and the fight she showed to race away from her rivals to score an authoritative win “That was a nice win, she had to go forward after being caught wide early which I see by her form is not her usual pattern, then had daylight in front of her but she managed to settle when she gained cover at about the 700 metre mark and from that point on I knew she would be in the finish. It was a strong staying performance and she gave me the feel she has more wins installed.”
