UPPER AVENUE OUT FIRST AND HOME FIRST
Mar 03, 2018
Upper Avenue backed up his solid first start third placing with a strong and determined win in the Beach To The Bush 7th of April Entires and Geldings Maiden at Aquis Park at the Gold Coast Turf Club Handicap. The son of Newgate Farm’s Foxwedge began fast and went to an early lead and was able to control the race from that point on to land his debut win.
Upper Avenue was ridden perfectly by Chris Whiteley in today’s event and he was rewarded for his patience and hard work on the gelding. Pre race plans were thrown out the window after he began like a rocket and went straight to the front but it didn’t make a difference as he was able to control the race from that point on “I didn’t think we would lead today, the plan was to sit third or fourth one out and let him come into the race but he began like a rocket and I found myself in front and nothing wanted to take us on so I thought leave him be and hopefully it works out which thankfully it did. It was a nice win as he still is learning what this racing caper is about, he has certainly come along way from the first morning I threw a leg over him about six weeks ago, I am sure that he will give the owners a bit of fun.”
Co Trainer Daniel Guy explained after the event that things just didn’t pan out for Upper Avenue at his first start and the stable had an air of confidence going into today’s event “He should have finished much closer at his first start at Lismore but he ended up on the wrong part of the track and you couldn’t make up ground where he was so his effort was good. We thought today he would settle in a similar position early but he jumped too good and was forced to lead which I don’t necessarily think is the way to ride him, but Chris summed it up perfectly and had enough up his sleeve to hold his rivals at bay. The best part about today’s win is it is for new clients Upper Bloodstock who are fast becoming a major player in the Australian / Asian bloodstock scene so it’s good to get a win for them on the board as quickly as we have.”
