LEFKAS ISLAND HAS OTHER IDEA’S
Aug 03, 2019
Lefkas Island headed to Aquis Park at the Gold Coast Turf Club today with her immediate future in doubt as the mare had recently been struggling to capture form. But the daughter of Love Conquers All threw a spanner in the works by taking out the Clevertronics Benchmark 65 Handicap over 1800 metres. Starting from the second widest barrier was no inconvenience for the mare as she settled well back in running off a hot early tempo letting the race unfold before jockey Jason Taylor started to make his move around the 600 metre mark and she was able to sustain a long run to get the bob in on the line to score the narrowest of victories.
Co Trainer Bryan Guy was left shaking his head after the race saying that the mare didn’t know how close she has become to finding a new home “We must feed them too well because if she didn’t fire today then she was to be sold. I spoke to Tony the owner last night and we were both of the same opinion that today was her last run but that is all up in the air now. I will have a talk to Tony and see what he wants to do with her now. What makes today’s win even better is it’s a $30 000 race so it was worthwhile keeping her going for this race”
Lefkas Island was ridden today by Jason Taylor whom has ridden a few winners of late for Team Guy and he didn’t let the team down again with a perfectly timed ride to get the result by the smallest of margins “I was unsure if I had won but thankfully she stuck her head out and got the money. It was a tough win she drew wide so we went back off a hot speed and when I asked her for her effort she responded, it could probably have been a bigger margin if I didn’t get pushed wide by tiring horse’s on the home turn.”
Co Trainer Daniel Guy thanked the owner Mr Tony Valos not only for his patience with the mare but also his loyalty to now three generations of the Guy Family “It’s great to get another winner for Tony he has been a very loyal owner and has been the stable’s longest client. It’s rare to see an owner stay with the one trainer but Tony has done this three times over starting with my Grandfather, Father and now myself, both Dad and I are very lucky to have him in the stable.”
