CHIKORITA DOES IT THE HARD WAY

Aug 21, 2019

Recent stable acquisition Chikorita headed to Ipswich today looking to make amends for an unlucky first up defeat and things looked to be heading down the same path as the first up run when he was trapped deep and forced to race wide for the entire race but the son of Hinchinbrook proved too strong in taking out the Channel Seven 0-65 Handicap today at Ipswich.

The pre race plan was thrown out the window when Chikorita was unable to take up the coveted one out, one back position and he settled mid field before a sudden slowing of the pace saw jockey Jim Byrne elect to ease him out of what could have been a difficult position. It was from that point the horse had to do it tough and he pulled himself forward to race outside the two leaders and upon straightening for home he was asked for his effort and responded in fine style to win by a margin of just under half a length.

Winning Co Trainer Bryan Guy explained he was confident going into the race but that confidence quickly evaporated when he was forced to race in a three wide position with no cover “I felt very confident today after his good first up run and his work since that run, but when he ended up racing three deep I thought we were in trouble. But he responded like a good horse, we think he has a good future and will win better races in the future.”

Jockey Jim Byrne was happy that the early move to ease the horse out of trouble paid off and explained that it’s not something he wanted to do but it was rather a case of necessity “He was a little further back then we initially planned but when the speed slowed I thought I don’t want to get caught up in trouble so I elected to ease him out wide because he was travelling so well and felt so strong. It was a good win and I think the horse has a nice future.”

Daniel Guy who Co Trains along side his father thanked the horse’s owner Magus Equine who is a new client to the stable “That breaks our maiden with Magus Equine and hopefully it’s the first of many. They are another of our Hong Kong based owners who are a very important part of our business and it continues our successful partnership with clients based in Hong Kong.”
