FORTIFICATION TOO STRONG FOR TEAM GUY

Mar 07, 2020

Fortification was having his second start today since being gelded at the end of last preparation and the procedure looks to have been a success with the well bred son of Redoute’s Choice taking out the ANZAC Day Racing 25th of April Benchmark 70 by just under a length, but not everything went to plan. Both Team Guy and Jockey Larry Cassidy had planned to take advantage of the good barrier and have the horse in a more handy position but the strong early tempo saw the gelding settle in the second half of the field. But this had no effect on the result when Fortification unleased a strong run from the top of the straight and finish over the top of his rivals to score an authoritative win under the top weight of 59kg’s.

Co Trainer Bryan Guy was a relieved man after the event but explained that he was a little more then worried after the first two furlongs “I must say I am a lot happier now he got the money, we had come up with a plan to have him 5th or 6th one off the fence in running and that clearly wasn’t the case but good riders and good horses can get the job done and I feel this horse has upside and was a good pickup for the stable.”

Jockey Larry Cassidy was pleased to retain the ride on Fortification today after he picked up the late ride on the gelding first up and explained that he was very confident of a victory today “I ran into Bryan and Daniel on Wednesday at Doomben and I was happy when they reported that the horse had improved since the first up run and I thought that the only way he wouldn’t be in the finish would be bad luck, well we had that and it still didn’t stop him, he is a nice horse with good upside and I can’t wait to see what type of finish he will have when he is down in the weights.”

Fortification is another horse that has tasted success since moving from an interstate stable to the Guy Stable and Co Trainer Daniel Guy was thankful that Horse Ventures Pty Ltd had sent the horse north “I must give a big thanks to the owner for giving Dad and I the opportunity with the horse, he came up in great order and it looks like a change of environment and the gelding operation has done the trick. We have had many horses that have been sent north over the years with the best being Eagle Way who entered the stable as a maiden and left as a Group One Derby winner, hopefully this horse can go through the grades, you never know what might happen with the Winter Carnival on our doorstep.”
