Lefkas Island headed to Ballina today looking to break a run of outs and although drawing barrier twelve out of thirteen the daughter of Love Conquers All proved too strong taking out The Ballina Cup Is On The 6thOf September Benchmark 55 Handicap. The mare was dropping back in class today and had the addition of a tongue-tie for the first time and this combination proved to be the winning ingredients for today’s victory.
Winning Co Trainer Bryan Guy was thrilled after the event that the stable was able to get another winner for long time client Tony Valos and explained to on track Sky Racing commentator Gary Kliese how important the owner stable combination has been over the years “It’s great to train another winner for Tony because he has been a valued member of the stable for probably fifty years. He started off with Dad and stuck with me not only when I took over from Dad but when I moved north to Queensland.”
Winning Jockey Paul Hammersley was in the hot seat today knowing that he would have to pull out one of his better rides due to the wide barrier and he carried out the prerace instructions to perfection “The plan was to roll forward and see what the speed would be like. So when I was able to get across and settle outside the early leader at an even tempo I knew she would have a kick and thankfully I was right. She deserved today’s win because she has been around the money for sometime without winning one, maybe she can put a couple together now”.
Lefkas Island was also coming off a thirty five day break between runs but the freshen up also served her well although in wasn’t entirely planned explained Co Trainer Daniel Guy “Apart from the bad barrier today our biggest concern was the thirty five days since her last run but she has struck heavy tracks, bad barriers and not the most suitable programming so it was a good effort to have that many days between races and be as tough as she was at the end of the race”.
