Happy Babe went to the races at Aquis Park at the Gold Coast Turf Club today looking to atone his narrow defeat last start and he again left the decision in the hands of the judges but unlike last start he was able to arrive just in time to score a very narrow victory when he took out the Boxing Day Race Day Benchmark 65 Handicap. The son of Sebring has been a model of consistency since joining the Guy Stable and while the winning margin was only small it sent the favourite backers home with a smile on their faces.

Winning Co Trainer Bryan Guy was surprised to see Happy Babe’s number go into the winners frame “I thought we got beat watching it live and to be honest the slow motion replay didn’t give me much hope either but with the rail out it makes it a bit deceptive but I am more then happy to take the win. He is a nice little horse who is a pleasure to train and have around the stable and to be honest I would like to have a stable full of horses like him.”

Winning Jockey Chris Whiteley was of a similar opinion to co trainer Bryan Guy and thought that he failed to arrive in time but was also happy to be wrong “Like Bryan I thought he didn’t arrive in time but he is such an honest horse which gives his all each time he steps out. I also thought the 59kg’s weighed him down a fair bit today so I feel that he will be even better down in the weights and if he keeps doing what he is doing then there is no reason why he can’t keep winning races.”

Happy Babe’s winning Co Trainer Daniel Guy was full of praise for the ride of jockey Chris Whiteley “That was a gem of a ride from Chris and even if the photo didn’t go our way I would have had no complaints with the ride. Chris has had three rides on him now for two wins and a second so they are building up a bit of a combination. It’s also good to see the owners getting rewarded for saving the horses life at the end of last prep when he needed life saving surgery and the owners didn’t hesitate to spend the money and save his life and now they are reaping the rewards for that decision.”
